The Internet is a wonderful place full of resources that can be really helpful for us.

The best way for finding information is through a virtual search engine. A search engine explores the resources on the Internet and gives results relating to your queries. Search engines allow keyword searches and use crawlers to locate sites or pages that match requests.

However, finding the information that is relevant for you is a challenge. Everyday more sites come into existence.
A simple query like “web hosting” on Google returns 15,100,000 results. Now how does the user know which site is useful for them, thus creating an “Information Overload” of sorts. How is the user assured of the quality of the information?

The thing about search engines is that they generally display all the web pages that contain any or both of the words contained in the search query.

So comes the question: how do we find the information we are looking for?

There are various techniques that you can use to make your search query better which will then help to achieve more relevant results.

For instance if you use the “+” operator and restructure your query to “web hosting” + Windows it will show only those sites that offer Windows hosting. You can also use the “AND” Boolean operator, depending on what you are comfortable with.

You can use the “-” operator and key in “web hosting” - Linux thereby telling Google to make sure that it does not display Linux related hosts. This is the same as using the “NOT” Boolean operator.

There are also keywords like ADJ, NEAR etc. that are used by some of the search engines. The NEAR operator looks for keywords specified in the query within certain proximity of each other i.e. it makes sure that both the keywords “web” & “hosting” are present on the same page and are placed nearby to each other in the text.

The ADJ operator is a stricter filter and returns only those pages where the keywords are next to each other i.e. it will only return pages where the keywords “web” and “hosting” are mentioned together.

Another technique to make sure you get better results is to use a sensible query. Make use of words that you think will be contained on the site you are looking for: “web hosting” is better then “I want web hosting”.

Also remember that search engines normally ignore certain words like “a’, “for”, “of”, “in”, “at” etc.

Another important thing to remember is that most search engines have a ‘tips’ page that specifically contains information on how to make better searches on the search engine. It is always good to read these tips.

Most search engines have an advanced search option that is really useful if you are not proficient at using operators while searching.

Searching and finding what you are looking for is easy if you are armed with the know-how of how to do it.

For those under the assumption that SEO is easy or anyone can create top ranking, that is not always the scenario. Aside from the various layers of knowledge and experience required, it is a time consuming endeavor.

Search engine optimization takes dedication, persistence, a firm commitment and forbearance. If you are lacking any of those qualities, then you are better off with pay per click.

The notion behind SEO is simplistic ,however the implementation requires knowledgeable application. People utilize search engines to find what they are looking for through using keywords.

Search engines, use data based on semantics like lexicons to consolidate and map out the World Wide Web through contextual relevance, taxonomy, on site signals and off back links from other sites.

In other words, the words on your pages serves as a common thread to indicate what the topic is on each page. Then based on how the content is tagged, what links from page to page exist and how others link to it help to consolidate an recursive score that weights how relevant your page is to the query a consumer may use to find your website.

If you website has the right signals as well as plenty of trust and authority, it will acquire a higher ranking for a specific group of keywords.Over time, a website increases momentum and starts to rank for more and more related keywords and is capable of acquiring relevance much easier than before.

Core competency is the bottom line, if you would rather be learning about the various ins and outs or search engines, then who would be running your business. Outsourcing SEO services vs. doing it yourself or using an in house SEO team is a viable solution that allows you to focus on the big picture.

There is no shame in letting specialists do what they love most. Competition exists and the scope of the web increases daily. For those late to the dance, SEO is not just an afterthought, it is an equalizer.

Your title tag is the most important 3 to 12 words on your Web page. It accounts for up to 80% of your rankings on search engines.

Here’s why:

Search Engines look for “searched for” words first in title tags.

The title tag is one of the main places search engines look to get a description of your site when posting the results of a keyword search.

Most people destroy any chance of success by making one or more of the following 3 mistakes in their title tags.

Before we start let’s describe what a TITLE TAG is and where it goes.
Your TITLE TAG goes at the top of the page right after your HEAD TAG. Use HTML code and do it exactly as shown below:

<br /> <HEAD><br /> <TITLE>Your title with a description using important Keyword Phrases</TITLE>

Now let’s get started.

Mistake #1. If your keywords or keyword phrases are not in your title tag, your Web page will NOT be found anywhere near the top of the search engines when these keywords and keyword phrases are search for.

Your keyword phrases absolutely MUST be in your title tag.

Mistake #2. Trying to put too many words and phrases in the title tag. Your title tag must be less than about 80 characters (including spaces) for Google and most other search engines. That’s why you can’t optimize a page for more than three to five keywords or keyword phrases. Two or three are better.

Mistake #3. I think this is the most repeated mistake of all and it is so easy to avoid. Be sure to START your title tag with a keyword or keyword phrase. And even more important . . . start your title tag with your most important keyword phrase.

Here are some other important notes about title tags.
Don’t repeat words over and over in your title tag. You can use some words two times such as “golf clubs” and “golf shoes,” but don’t over do it.

Have a different title tag for each page of your Web site.

Don’t put your company name in your title tag.

Killer Title Tags are your key to high rankings on search engines
Most people spend days or weeks on their Web site pages and then spend less than five minutes (some people have admitted to spending less than one minute) writing their title tags.

Remember: Your title tag is responsible for 80% of your success for high ranking on the search engines. AND it is responsible for getting traffic after you get the high ranking (because it is likely to be used for the description of your site when search engines list your page in the results for a keyword search.)

In summary: The time you spend designing and writing your title tags will be well rewarded.
