The Gouldian Finch, Erythrura gouldiae (or Chloebia gouldiae), well-identified as the Lady Gouldian Finch, Gould’s Finch or Rainbow Finch , is a brilliant passerine bird indigenous to Australia. There is strong evidence of a continuing decline, even at the best identified site near Katherine in the Northern Territory. It is bred in captivity, but in 1992 it was categorized as an endangered species. This was due to the fact that a: the viable population size was calculated to be no mare than twenty five hundred matured individuals and b: no permanent population was identified to contain more than two hundred and fifty adult adults and last 3: that a continued fall was observed in the amount of matured individuals. It is presently subject to a conservation program.

The Gouldian Finch was described by British ornithological artist John Gould in 1844 and named after his wife Elizabeth. It is also recognized in its native country as the Rainbow, Gould, or Lady Gouldian Finch (although Mrs. Gould did not hold the title Lady). It is a member of the weaver-finch family Estrildidae, which is occasionally regarded a subfamily of Passeridae.

Exported to Europe, the US and Japan has rendered this bird with a amount of color mutations such as the blue back, pastel, silver, yellow back and even white.

Why do dogs bark like they do? I know there is one thing that I really hate, it is the sound of the dogs barking. What am supposed to do about a barking do? Barking dogs are going to be the death of me. Sometimes my dog will just start barking for no good reason. If we are on a walk, and the dog goes crazy, there is really little that I can do get him settle down. One time last summer, it was the farmers market, we decided to take the dog down to the park, but this turned out to be a not so good of an idea. There was another German Shepherd walking around and this is something that my Buster was not going to take. Unfortunately, my wife was walking the dog at this time. As soon a Buster saw this dog, he took off and started running after the other dog. He ripped her to the ground and drug her through the grass for about twenty feet. I ran over just in time to stop him from getting that other dog. I don’t know what his problem is. Why is he doing this? He does this pretty much any time he see another dog. Maybe he is just trying to protect my family.

If you have even a passing interest in the topic of fish aquarium, then you should take a look at the following information. This enlightening article presents some of interesting facts on the subject of aquariums.

An aquarium is made of glass or extremely strong plastic and is basically made for holding fish, amphibians or any other type of marine animal. The aquarium can contain tropical or salt water fish, or even corals but the aquarium has to be able to maintain the weight of the water that will be put into the tank. Aquariums are fast becoming one of the leading hobbies around, many people use aquariums for decorative purposes.

Fish aquariums range in size, they can be simple gold fish bowls or they can be intensive set up reaching something like eight or even nine feet wide. Many people even boast of a fish room. Fish collecting has been around for years and is especially popular in countries like Japan. The Japanese are renowned for keeping coldwater fish such as Koi in extremely decorative ponds outside, these Koi are basically beautifully decorated goldfish.

Aquariums are amazing pieces of equipment but they do need a lot of work and attention . That’s why this hobby is not for young people. It is more of an older person’s hobby who is going to be willing and responsible enough for all the things that are required when setting up and maintaining an aquarium. They can be the most beautiful thing to look at if they are decorated nicely enough, and I’m sure that you will do a great job in making sure that the aquarium looks just like the creature natural habitat, this is what makes the animal settle quicker! Just make sure that you are prepared to take on the responsibility before investing in an aquarium as they can cost quite a lot of money!

So now you know a little bit about fish aquariums. Even if you don’t know everything, you have done something worthwhile: you have expanded your knowledge.

Five Simple Tips To Get Your Dog Ready For Dog Shows

Every truly avid dog owner wishes for the chance to show off his
pet at the nearest dog show. It is both a way to validate your
pride in owning your pet and a chance to see other beautiful
dogs in action. For the first timer, however, entering the world
of competitive dog shows can truly be a daunting experience.

Here are five simple tips to get your dog, and yourself, ready
for the limelight:

1) Know The Field - Everybody has to start somewhere and
entering dog shows requires that you know what to expect. Read
literature on dog shows. Go to dog shows as a spectator and see
what goes on. Get a good grasp of the jargon. Knowing the
difference between all-breed dog shows and specialty shows can
help a lot in determining what shows to join and how to get your
pet ready.

2) Know Your Dog - Knowledge of your pet is essential when
getting ready for a dog show. A little effort in researching
your dog’s breed and health history can pay off immensely.
Getting familiar with your dog’s quirks, habits and abilities is
also a great way to bond with them and paves the way to a
successful performance in the show ring.

3) Training, Lots of Training - Training for the show, for
yourself and your dog is very important. It is advisable that
you have the help of a trained handler when you’re starting out.
Training dogs also requires conditioning them physically so that
they are in tip-top shape when they participate in the show.
Remember, dog shows are like beauty pageants. A well-trained dog
is both pleasant to look at and be with.

4) A Visit To The Vet - Every dog needs a visit to the vet when
getting ready for a dog show. Having your pet inoculated is a
standard procedure to protect your dog, and other dogs, from
spreading diseases during the show. A check-up on your pet’s
physical condition would also help greatly in assuring that your
pride and joy is ready for the show.

5) Ask Questions - Learning is a continual process. Asking
questions from handlers and veterinarians on how you should
treat or handle your dog can open up insights on caring for it.

These five simple tips are just the beginning. Like they say,
experience is the best teacher, but with this advice you’re well
on your way to getting your dog ready for the show.

Animals make the headlines today for many reasons. The problem is that animals tend to make the news for the horrible and unthinkable things that happen to them. In every state across the United States and every country across the globe atrocities happen to animals great and small everyday. We have covered news stories involving dogs and cats as well as assorted types of animals being stared to death, beaten to death, burned with acid, inhumanely executed in addition to countless other ways. We have written stories about animals that were killed for the fun of it by the sickest of individuals and by accident by the ones who loved them the most. But, with all of the negative headlines that animals are involved in, there are a number of animals that make the news for wonderful, heartwarming and humorous reasons.

Many dogs and cats can says that their owners would not be alive if it weren’t for them. Dogs and cats have called the police when their owners were in trouble and in need of medical help, dogs have waken the owners up to let them know there was a fire in the house and still others have been the driving force behind helpful laws being enacted to help make the world a better place to live. Below I have placed one of my favorite articles I have written which highights one of the many happy reasons an animal has made the news. I hope that you enjoy it.

Black Labrador Honored as Katrina Hero

At the annual Genesis Awards, hosted by the Humane Society, a black Labrador now called Katrina was honored for her life saving efforts. A New Orleans man who was in trapped in flood waters after the hurricane recalled how the dog helped to get him to higher ground, without her he surely would have drowned. The awards dinner attended by leading animal rights activists granted the dog a standing ovation. Katrina was rescued from a shelter after the man’s story was reported on a local Los Angeles TV station.

Yes, animals have certainly solidified their position in the world today for both the good, as seen above, and the bad. Join us as we explore the world of animal news one day at a time.

There are lots of ways a horse can go lame. Perhaps the most common cause of lameness is a result of Navicular Syndrome. The fortunate thing is that it can be treated where the horse gets complete, successful recovery if diagnosed and treated in it’s early stages. Here’s what you need to know about Navicular Syndrome.

First, there is a small bone between the coffin bone and the short pastern bone called the navicular bone. This bone is important in that it distributes the horse’s weight between the coffin bone and the short pastern bone. The result is that it reduces the stress on both the coffin bone and short pastern bone when the foot lands to the ground and weight is put on it. (Even though the rear feet have navicular bones, it is the fore feet that are most often affected)

The navicular bone also works with a tendon called the “deep digital flexor tendon.” This tendon flexes the coffin and pastern joints. It also absorbs shock when the hoof strikes the ground. When the flexor tendon moves, it slides over the cartlidge-covered navicluar bone which lowers the work load of the tendon when the foot moves.

Thus, when the horse’s foot lands to the ground there is a lot of force on the navicular bone. As the horse’s weight is transferred over the foot, the bone is pushed against the tendon. When this happens repeatedly, then damage to the navicular bone and the tendon can occur.

One thing that can happen is the cartlidge can lose its slippery surface and friction can develop between the navicular bone and the tendon. Then the tendon can become rough and make the sliding motion on the navicluar bone even worse. This ultimately leads to pain for the horse and worse, lameness. Worse, the blood flow to the navicular bone and the tendon could be decreased and it may not heal.

How can you tell if your horse may have navicular syndrome? One is he may not want to change leads. He may lose his suppleness or perhaps have a stiff and jerky gait. As this gets worse the may show lameness where you may see short stride in one or both front legs. The horse will purposely try to step on his toe portion of the foot because the pain will be in the back of the foot. Thus, you will see his toe is worn more than any other part of the foot.

This condition will more easily show up in hard-working horses. It also is more apparent when a horse works in tight circles. When he is moving in a straight line it is not as apparent. The lameness seems to almost disappear when the horse is at rest. It will reappear when it is working hard again.

How do you treat navicular syndrome? First, begin early. The horse owner is responsible for recognizing there may be a problem. If there is a problem, then the veterinarian and the farrier should be called so treatment can begin. The treatment consists of corrective trimming and shoeing, pain relieving and inflammation decreasing drugs, and carefully controlled exercise.

Interestingly, treatment for navicular syndrome may be quite different from veterinarian to the next. They will not necessarily prescribe the same treatment.

Exercise is one of the most important parts of the treatment because it increases blood flow to the horse’s foot. But remember that the exercise has to be carefully done.

What horses are the most likely to have navicular syndrome? Hard working horses like race horses, cutting, reining, calf roping, and barrel racers. They are especially more likely to get navicular syndrome if they work on hard surfaces and have poor conformation.

Navicular syndrome is most common in horses with upright pasterns. Navicluar syndrome is also common in horses when the hoof and pastern slope at different angles.

As a horse owner, you should know that improper trimming and shoeing can also cause navicular syndrome. If the farrier trims a heel too low on a horse with an upright pastern it can increase the pressure where the flexor tendon and the navicular bone meet.

Thus, be watchful of your horse. If you see something out of the ordinary when you ask your horse to work hard you may begin by looking for navicular syndrome since it is the most common cause of lameness in horses. As always, consult your veterinarian for diagnoses and treatments.

If you have a dog, then you are already familiar with the art of dog grooming. If you are just considering a new pet, there is plenty to think about and this includes their appearance. Some dogs are easier to care for than others, including ones with shorter hair. A dog with long hair requires daily brushing and sheds constantly, which can make for a long day of vacuuming. Dogs with short hair, on the other hand, can be brushed several times each week and their fur will not fill up your vacuum as quickly.

A part of proper dog grooming is finding the right hair brush for your pet. Gentle strokes will allow your pet to get used to the idea of being brushed, which can make them anxious at first. A regular bath is also a part of dog grooming, which can sometimes be the messiest. In the beginning, pets are often resistant to the idea of a bath. It’s best to start as early as possible in teaching your dog how to act, which can be done by bathing your puppy early in his/her life. When they are able to run and play, they are able to have a bath and will probably even grow to enjoy it after time. If you have a friend or relative who is willing to help you, invite them over. While one holds the puppy, the other can wash him/her with a washcloth.

If you are unable to handle dog grooming, there are businesses that can take care of it for you. A local veterinarian or animal hospital is likely to have grooming services, along with businesses specifically dedicated to this purpose. In exchange for a fee, your pet can have his/her nails clipped, be given a bath and get their fur brushed all in one afternoon. This process isn’t necessarily a lengthy one, but it’s best to make an appointment before showing up for dog grooming.

The proper dog grooming techniques will make your pet to feel better overall and will make you happy to see that your pet is in good spirits. Even though they love to dig in our yard or investigate every hole that they find, dogs love to feel good and a part of that means being clean and well groomed. Dog grooming is also a reflection of how much you care for your pet, so let the world know how much you love them.

As much as you love the sound of your new little bird, you probably don’t want to hear it at the crack of dawn. If your feathered friend’s morning song is interrupting your sleep, you might want to buy a bird cage cover. Though not an absolute necessity, covers have some definite advantages.

First of all, a bird cage cover blocks the cool air, keeping your bird warmer in the winter. It also blocks some sound, and may help your bird rest easier. Perhaps most importantly, the bird cage cover keeps out the light, persuading your bird to sleep until you are ready to wake up. This can help youand your birdget some much needed rest.

Though any material could work in theory, it is best to buy a cover that is made for bird cages. Otherwise, you run the risk of your bird becoming tangled in the material. You also need a cover that is washable.

Bird cage covers are available at most pet supply stores. They can also be ordered online. If you prefer, you can make your own bird cage cover. This will enable you to choose a fabric that matches your home. If you go this route, make sure that you choose a material that is washable and that will not entangle your bird.

If you choose to use a bird cage cover, try to use it roughly the same hours each day. Like most people, birds need a routine to feel safe, happy, and secure.

USE THE MEDIA–marketing help for biz.

“Do News Releases Work?”

Invariably, when I talk with business people on-line, someone asks that question. Many of us have sent out a press release only to be greeted with silent indifference from the media. But that doesn’t have to be the case. The media needs, must have, craves, can’t do without a steady stream of usable news. YOU are the person that can supply the news they need. And you can get free publicity for your business at the same time.

Even better, you can email your press release to the media. That makes it much cheaper to send a release to lots of media sources

The news release is the time honored method of putting nformation before the media. This is especially true for businesses and organizations. It takes the form of a page or two detailing your message, generally slanted a bit to favor your goals. In its most basic form, the news release has your name and contact number at the top, followed by some points that will interest the media outlet.

You Gotta’ Be Newsworthy!

Make sure your story is something that the reporter will agree is important. Newspapers don’t like it if you send in an ad for your business to be used as a news story. Their attitude is, “Hey, if you want to advertise, call the advertising department and buy and ad.” You have to cloak your message in a story that is newsworthy, a story that readers will find helpful, interesting, simulating, sad, or hopeful.

If your message seems too commercial for your local daily newspaper or TV newscast, try sending your release to a trade publication in your industry. A story that is of little interest to the general pubic will often be welcomed with open arms by a more specialized industry newsletter or e-zine.

The bottom line is this: think like the media, shape your message to fit their likes. Do that and your message has a good chance of being used. Above all, don’t let up. While one media manager may not have the slightest interest in your idea, another will welcome you with open arms. The media needs piles of fresh stories everyday.

Where Do You Find the Addresses for the Media?

It used to be that you had to shuck out a few hundred bucks to buy a media guide on CD-ROM. Now that just about every media entity in the world is on-line, the process of getting accurate addresses is much easier and
cheaper.

Gebbie, a well-known guide, has jumped ahead of the pack and put their addresses and links on a well organized web site (http://www.gebbieinc.com). I recently sent a press release via e-mail to over 1000 of the radio stations Gebbie has listed and hot very good
results.

Remember, bulk mailing your press release to media is not the same as spamming individuals. Media expects to get unsolicited promotional announcements. That’s the business their in.

There are also companies that will send your press release out for you, although I’m not so sure you’ll get better results than the do-it-yourself method. Mostly automated press release services make the job much faster.
The top press release agency in the corporate world is PR Newswire
(http://www.prnewswire.com or 800/832-5522).

PR News Target (http://www.newstarget.com) claims to have cultivated a relationship with thousands of editors covering a variety of industries. I would take that with a grain of salt. When I worked in media we often got calls or cards from PR firms asking if we wanted to get their stuff. We usually said yes because they would sometimes send free hats, shirts, and other trinkets. The press releases often went into the trash. It’s much better if YOU cultivate your own relationship with editors.

Jennifer Howard of American Small Business Association does a fine job of sending to over 5,000 media outlets for $250 .

Also check out Automated Press Releases (http://www.gapent.com/pr). For the nice price of $12.50 per hundred, they’ll send your release to any of
their 7,600 media sources in 37 countries. While you’re at the Automated site, read through their “Pet Peeves of the Media” article.

Some PR firms will write your press release for you. The price usually runs around $200 for a one-pager. (Don’t do it! I’ll write it for you cheaper.)

Here’s a simple example of what a standard press release looks like:
