If you pay attention to the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. I love that quote, it applies to so many facets of life, and poker online is one of them.

A lot of people think that poker is too complicated for them to learn, but if you are just starting out, poker online can be a simple game. That’s not to say that poker isn’t complicated, there are innumerable things to consider if you want to play your very best. If you’re just starting out, however, it’s impossible to learn everything at once-you’ll just get overwhelmed and frustrated.

As a beginner, you only need to know a few things to get started. When you’ve got these down, you can start picking up more poker wisdom as you play.

Be picky about your hole cards. As a beginner, you’re not quite ready to bluff yet, since you’re opponent-reading skills aren’t fully developed, just stick with playing the best hands. Pocket pairs down to 9’s are doable, and A-K or A-Q are good hands to start with as well.

Bet or fold. If you can’t play your hand aggressively, you probably shouldn’t be playing it at all.

If think you’ve lost the hand, just fold. It’s tough to fold high pair or two pair, but if there’s a draw on the board and someone’s betting into you, it’s not worth it. When you gain more experience, you’ll be able to read your opponents, but when you’re just starting out, play it safe.

Though this year’s World Series of Poker is over and a new champ crowned, the remaining four players for the November 9 for 2009 should be commended for a job well done. With 6,484 players turning out to try their poker online hand again this year, it was no small feat to be at the last sect standing, and though we might not have known them all before by name, they are certainly a fine batch of poker online players. Davin Moon, Eric Buchman, Steven Begleiter, Jeff Shulman, Joe Cada, Kevin Schaffel, Phil Ivey, Antoine Saout, and James Akenhead made up a group of players who, though prone to some of the more back and forth action I’ve seen in a while, proved they made it to where they were not only by getting lucky in the right spots (though certainly that), but also having the general sense of knowing when to strike and when to hide in poker. Their aggressive edges did them well. Interestingly, the usually quite aggressive Phil Ivey seemed more subdued than usual, though this can surely be attributed to his smaller stack. Had he come in with chips somewhere in the teens, we likely would have seen a much different outcome.

Getting to know your poker players is a key component to being successful at poker. Figuring out what cards they’ll play and how they’ll play them at the casino will give you a big advantage over them, but I have yet to find a poker player who is forthcoming about how they play the game. In fact, out of all the opponents who I’ve asked, not one has shown me their hand while they were playing it-can you believe it? That said, you’re going to have to pick up their play style by paying attention to how they play. Keep your eyes out for any showdown to see what cards you opponents have played with, and take mental notes of how they played those hands. After seeing a few of your opponents’ cards, you should be able to fit them into a style-were their card selections tight or loose, and did they play those cards passively or aggressively? As soon as you think you know an opponent’s style, here’s a fun little game to keep you tuned in when you’re not in a hand: choose a player who’s in the hand, and guess his cards by how he plays them. You can gauge how well you’re reading your opponents, and make adjustments as you see fit.

Though according to the math of a situation, there are times in online poker where you will essentially have “no choice” but to call a bet, even knowing that you have no poker online hand. As when you are pot committed in the blind, or have been caught reraising with way too much of your stack, the books will say that if you are getting the right odds, it is a must to call with any two cards, regardless of how far behind you are. Sometimes, though, even when pot odds and stack size might, by the book, suggest that you have “no choice,” there can be other circumstances that dictate otherwise. For instance, when folding a poker hand can guarantee you a big jump in prize money (as in, another player is all in ahead of you, and might be knocked out this hand) it can be better to wait and allow yourself the chance to survive and gain the difference in the amount you would win in 4th place the amount in 5th, even if you are pretty much guaranteed to be out next. Secondly, if you are so sure that you are dead to a small number of outs (you hold two low cards against a player who would only raise with a big pair), it can be correct to give yourself a better spot to hang on a little longer, versus the almost inevitable knock out.

In Texas Hold ‘Em No Limit poker online, players can “go all in” and push their entire chip stack out as a bet. It’s intimidating when the stack is big, and usually scares away other online poker players unless one has a very strong hand. Some players use this tactic frequently to bully the table and steal blinds and pots since most players won’t risk the bulk of their chips unless they believe they have the nuts. The all-in shove, for all its drama and bullying effect, should be used sparingly. Many players misunderstand the proper use of the all-in. It should only be deployed when you have hit what is most likely the best hand on the flop, such as completing a set with the high card on board. When you are confident your hand is best and the board shows little chance of a better hand materializing, then the all-in strategy is prudent. However, if the board texture is such that the turn or river cards can beat your poker online hand - with the possibly of a flush, straight or full house developing, then shoving all-in is risky and often foolish. A player with many outs to a better hand may call you and hit the draw to decimate your chip stack. It’s also foolish to shove all-in when you know you are holding the nuts early in the round. In this situation - saying flopping a full house or the nut flush - you don’t want to scare others off the pot, but keep them betting into it.

Are you an occasional bowler eager to take on this intricate sport competitively for the first time. If that’s your goal, this is key cross-roads in your development as a true student of the game. Read carefuly, ’cause our bowling pro shop’s “Next Steps” handbook to bowling perfection may take your game to new levels. An expert at your city’s bowling pro shop can help you to uncover bowling talent. A wise bowling wizard once said: the bowling balls do all the work (after you roll them). That’s a joke. I admit, bowling is a simple game with not-so simple details. Don’t fret, we can have you throwing the bowling ball correctly.

First, invest a little in tailored a personalized bowling ball, which will do wonders! You’ll notice a difference with your own stuff. It’s no joke, have your own ball drilled, and you’ll never go back. A properly drilled bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. Of course another critical matter is enjoying quality bowling shoes which smell fresh, look good and help your foot work.

Now that you already purchased your bowling ball and shoes, listen to the second best bowling tip: aiming the ball. While you face the pins, try not to focus on the pins. Line up using the notches on the lane like a sling shot. What’s the point? It is easier to aim for a mark which sits nearer. For it to work right, make sure you line-up at the same position on the floor every approach. If you do it the same every time you can fine-tune your marksmanship.

What do you make of curves, to achieve proper speed and ball control? That’s the third-most essential bowler tip. They get traction with the specialized bowling ball. A lot of us who were bown to bowl carry two or three bowling balls to get amazing hooks, selected precisely for the type of game and lane. But greenhorns should work with just one, and steer clear of a ball that is too heavy for you. Many semi-pro bowlers use bowling balls made for extra expert grip. However you should know these special-made balls can make even moderately good bowlers appear foolish. And that does it for our first three bowling tips. Rest assured you’ll find soon.

Thanks, Michael Rogers

We manage a company team (US Systems) a group from the operation at our company’s department of communications here in Plano, Texas. I chime in with advice to aspiring bowlers online and at the bowling center. Also, I gotta give a shout out to our crew at the finals in Atlantic City. Knock ‘em dead.

More good news is coming seemingly every day for those of us that simply want to play online poker legally. I have written about several of the ongoing issues, including the passing in the U.S. of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which unfairly and illegally does not allow people in the U.S. to spend their own money on poker online if they choose. Well, Reuters recently reported that the European Union appears primed to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization next month over the United States’ enforcement of the UIGEA, specifically as it involves the U.S. possibly targeting European companies while protecting their American counterparts. As I have oft states, anti-online poker bills in the U.S. or anywhere else have the capacity to affect not just the country they are passed in, but the whole world. Kudos to the European Union for doing their part to overturn this vile law.

The European Commission, acting on behalf of EU industry officials, has been investigating for nearly a year whether or not the U.S. has unfairly sought to enforce restrictions against non-U.S. based online gambling companies, according to the Poker News.

Meanwhile, back in the States, a Massachusetts Congressman, Barney Frank, is preparing legislation that would repeal the ridiculous UIGEA law. Hopefully, some day in the near future, all this anti-online poker madness will be behind us and we can all just focus on the game itself.

Implied odds are one of those perpetual stumbling blocks for new players. They are difficult to calculate in a online poker game, and very few people can actually do the math in their head at the proper speed to keep game play up to speed. I am going to offer you an easy out from all the calculations- implied odds don’t really matter. They are a great tool, don’t get me wrong. But you can get by just fine without them.

The problem with implied odds in poker online is that they are only the best guess at what will happen. They are not, in any way, an accurate prediction of what will actually happen. The main problem is that so many people will base their actions on their implied odds without realizing that they are not 100% accurate. This leads to some serious problems with new players who are too busy with calculations t actually watch the game.

I strongly think that all beginners out there need to avoid the trap of implied odds. It just gets you into trouble and limits your ability to win. poker online Implied odds are not really the great source of knowledge that they are meant to be. Despite the popular myth to the contrary, they don’t really matter.

With the explosion of online pokern rooms, a new breed of poker player has developed. The shark. And so has a new kind of poker room.

Now I’m not talking in terms of poker sharks, you know the old stereotype of the player who uses a farce of naivety to make the good players think he or she isn’t as good as they really are.

No, this new shark is popping up online all over the place, sometimes appearing in collusion and sometimes as a loner, but they all share one main purpose. To rape and pillage the average fish’s bankroll.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about people taking advantage of their situation and using what advantages they have to win; after all, poker is a competitive game.

However, sometimes it just gets taken too far. Here’s the scheme. People will open massive amounts of different poker clients, playing several different tables at one time waiting on that perfect hand to totally destroy another player’s bankroll, and then they leave.

This isn’t something done on the micro scale, but instead it’s done on such a massive scale that the profits can really come in fast. Imagine manning 5-10 different computer monitors with 5-10 tables a piece just waiting on the AA or KK hand to take some amateur all in with their JQ, and because of careful observation they know they can keep them coming and betting with them.

To a real poker player this is of course a bastardization of the game. But for these new sharks, they’re driven by nothing more than pure profit.

I guess I just find it interesting that both types of players continue to exist. The one who is only out for the money, and the one who so aimlessly throws it away without knowing any better. Eh, maybe it’s just my darwinistic perspective.

Oh, yeah, that new poker room. It’s called Cool Hand Online Poker, and limits players to only 2 real cash tables and one tournament table, instead of the multiple that other sites tend to. Again, absurd to me, but to each their one I guess.
